The proposed project is to convert an existing 1 story, 5400sf mortuary building into the new home for the Rainier Valley Food Bank.
The scope of work includes expanding and remodeling the existing building to allow food bank programs and operations to move in. Proposed spaces and alterations the design team is considering include: adding an interior or exterior walk-in cooler and a walk-in freezer; converting the existing lobby into a commercial kitchen with walk-up to-go window; adding a larger entry canopy; converting a large room into a grocery store-like distribution space; adding a small mezzanine; adding a loading dock; converting some existing parking spaces into a garden and waste enclosure; expand the building toward Rainier Ave by ~3900sf for additional office and staff support spaces.
There is also interest to activate and occupy the site with a temporary food village during the design, permitting, and construction process.
