1001 ALASKAN WAY
Sept. 6, 2022:
The Argosy float replacement project is intended to address the maintenance needs of a small existing float at Seattle's Pier 54, which has reached the end of its useful life. This float provides one of two downtown boarding locations for Argosy, making it a key component of Argosy's commercial tour operation. The float is also used for short-term moorage of maintenance and assist vessels. An in-kind replacement is needed; refer to the attached photographs of the existing, deteriorating float.
The project proposes to remove the existing float in its entirety. The float will be detached from its support piles and disposed of off-site. Thereafter, a prefabricated float will be delivered to the site via barge or tug and will be positioned within the same footprint as the previous float. The existing structure will be replaced with a new float constructed from standard, non-toxic materials, which, unlike in the present structure, will prevent continued deterioration.
Given the need for the float to support high load capacity during loading and unloading of passengers and cargo, and to ensure stability for public use in a wave-influenced environment, a complete subsurface floatation system is necessary. This results in 17% functional open space in this site's deepwater environment; this is the maximum functional open space that can be provided given the small size of the float and the safety and environmental conditions that influence final design.
The float will connect to the six existing steel piles via five-sided pile hoops. Pile hoops will be connected by hand from a standing position on the new float or via a small support vessel accessing the pile hoops from
beneath Pier 54.
This project will occur overwater and will not require any in-water work. Removal of the existing float and installation of the new float is expected to be completed in 3 days or fewer.
