5610 WEST MARGINAL WAY SW

Oct. 28, 2026: Alaska Marine Lines (AML) seeks to install four fender piles along the face of Dock 1 within the Duwamish River to replace four existing deteriorating piles. AML also seeks to perform minor repair activities on the elevated dock. Lynden Dock 1 is located on the Duwamish River waterfront. AML provides barge service to and from Alaska, Hawaii, and the Yukon Territory. Lynden Dock 1 supports overall facility operations and the transfer of container loads, platform loads, oversized freight, and breakbulk, including boats, trailers, and vehicles. The existing dock protection includes two three-pile dolphins which show signs of damage, and do not provide sufficient protection moorage to support barges utilizing the site. A conditions assessment performed by PND Engineers in the spring of 2026 found components of the dock in fair to critical condition. Timber elements showed significant damage and deterioration, including fungal growth, localized crushing, splitting, and major section loss. AML proposes to install four mono-pile fender piles, offset from the pier line, to replace the deteriorated dolphins and fender piles which act as marine fenders and continue to support facility operations at the Lynden 1 Dock. The current condition of the dock poses a significant safety risk; the proposed updates will not only further support the dock but enable AML to safely continue use and operations of the facility.
