Jan. 8, 2024: Newcastle Beach Park Pier and Bulkhead Maintenance. The Newcastle Beach Park pier and bulkhead maintenance project (the Project) will include reestablishing a curtain wall breakwater beneath the existing pier. A curtain wall breakwater was originally constructed in 1988, but later removed in 2020 due to water quality concerns. Since its removal, water quality has not significantly improved and erosion has increased, affecting the adjacent swimming area and integrity of existing infrastructure. A coastal engineering wind-wave analysis was conducted to evaluate options for a new wave break system (Blue Coast Engineering 2023). In the end, it was determined that a design consistent with the previously installed breakwater would be necessary to achieve the desired wave attenuation. The Project will also include required maintenance to the pier and adjacent bulkhead structures, based on a recent condition assessment (WSP 2023). The goal of the project is to reduce erosion through reestablishment of the curtain wall breakwater and to restore the structural capacity of the existing pier and bulkheads.
